Story: Amala Paul, after losing her husband in an accident, pins all her hopes on her daughter, played by Yuvasri. Her only dream is to give her daughter with good education. Like every parent, she wants her daughter to be a doctor or an engineer. However, Yuvasri shows little interest in education. Her rational standpoint being, her mother, who takes up multiple jobs to make ends meet, cannot afford her higher education. Yuvasri continues to focus more on television soaps and cinema, which demoralizes her mother. But Amala is in no mood to give up and does something unexpected to make her daughter realize the importance of education. The remaining part should be seen on-screen

Review: Actors who stand out in the entire play are Revathy and Amala Paul. While Revathy's performance is as refined as it can get, Amala Paul has given her best. This is one of her best acts after Mynaa. Samuthirakani's role is largely unconvincing as his antics as a government school head master are exaggerated in many places. Yuvasri comes up with a decent performance and adds credibility to the film.

One of the major concerns here is that the entire film looks like a documentary drama with no scope for entertainment. What contributes majorly to this factor is that Amma Kanakku is a film lacking twists and turns. Having said that, the engagement factor in the screenplay comes in the form of educating audience the importance of education and a subject like Mathematics. Editing too, is neatly done as the film slams out in less than 2 hours. Music by Ilaiyaraaja is exact and flows along well with the story. Cinematography by Gavemic U Ary is also good.
